DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY GMC HANDWARA

Dr. Rehana Amin

  • Assistant Professor & I/C Head
  • Department of Psychiatry
  • GMC Handwara

Message

As the In-charge Head it is my honor to welcome you to the newly established Department of Psychiatry, GMC Handwara. The Departmentof Psychiatry started with the creation of GMC Handwara in the year 2022 with an aim to provide better mental health care services to all those who are in need. Mental health is a universal human right. Everyone has a right to the highest attainable standard of mental health irrespective of their caste, culture, and creed. Mental health is as important as physical health which fits the adage that “a sound mind resides in a sound body” and vice-versa. Nowadays, life has become so demanding that mental health is greatly affected and often neglected. Most of the people don’t know how mental health issues present. They often wander here and there, till the time when simple mental health issues have turned into full-blowndisorders. Mental disorders have taken a toll and are the second most common cause of disability worldwide. The attitude of people towards mental disorders is quite negative. The probable reasons behind the indifferent approach towards mental illnesses or persons with mental illness are either people don’t believe mental illnesses exist or don’t know what mental illnesses are. They also lack insight into mental illnesses or fear of seeking help due to associated stigma and societal discrimination. It does not mean a person is no longer useful once his or her mental health is not optimal. Having a mental illness does not deprive him or her of their rights. So, taking care of our mental health must be our priority. The people from North Kashmir especially district Kupwara and adjoining areas had to travel long distances to seek mental health treatment due to the unavailability of mental health care professionals in this part of the world. To bridge this gap the Department of Psychiatry provides easily available and accessible high-quality mental health treatment to the deserving population. Presently in the Department of Psychiatry, trained mental health professionals like three Psychiatrists, two trained junior residents, and counsellors along with a team fromthe District Mental Health Unit are available. Currently, the department is running six outpatient (OPD) services in a week wherein patients are getting psychiatric consultations besides counselling and psychotherapy (in collaboration with DMHU).The consultation liaison Psychiatry services are also provided by the Department side by side. Profoundly,as the first academic session of this medical college starts this year 2023, the Departmentof Psychiatry is actively participating in all the academic activities of undergraduate students and is committed to imparting basic knowledge of the subject to them.

Vision and goals

Short-term goals are
  • To strengthen the already existing OPD services by starting separate specialty clinics like the child psychiatry clinic, women's mental health clinic, and geriatric psychiatry clinic to improve the diagnostic evaluation, and treatment process.
  • Also, an important need of the hour would be to establish an advanced independent Drug De-addiction Centre under GMC Handwara to curb the hidden epidemic of substance use disorder.
  • Shortly, with the increase in the infrastructure and manpower, the department would be able to start the inpatient facilities and introduce novel methods of treatment like deep brain stimulation techniques to our already existing services and means of treatment.
Long-term goals are :
  • To start postgraduate MD and DNB courses so that highly qualified professionals will be trained in mental health and related research to contribute to the diverse field of Psychiatry.
  • On a greater platform, the department would like to develop links with related departments like neurology and neurosurgery to form an Institute of Neuroscience an integrated and highly sophisticated model to provide the best possible treatment by allied medical branches.
  • The department can reach the heights of being a centre of excellence in academic, research, and clinical fields with constant support and guidance from Principal GMC, Handwara, and the Health and Medical Education Department of the Government of J&K.
